ELG's Sustainability Update 2020

07.06.2021

ELG’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is of consistently high importance to the Group. Since 2014 we publish a Sustainability Report, providing information on our developments and improvement efforts. 2020 was an exceptional year due to the Covid19 pandemic and extensive internal changes. ELG’s Sustainability Update 2020 covers our progress and development regarding CSR measures throughout the group.

ELG’s Carbon Footprint

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and thus reducing the environmental impact is becoming an imperative. ELG is proud to be a key contributor to the protection of our global resources through its inherent business model of trading and processing secondary raw material for the stainless steel industry and for superalloys. Currently, we have several initiatives in place to further improve our CO2 footprint. Our French and Australian yards installed solar panels to save one-third of the used energy and our French locations switched to an electricity supplier with 100% green energy. In Taiwan we installed dust collector systems to reduce air pollution.

Health & Safety

We intensified measures to report and act on Lost Time Injuries (LTI), which are now reported to each Health and Safety responsible and the Board of Directors of ELG Haniel within 24 hours. For 2021, we targeted half of 2020’s Lost Time Injuries Frequency Rate (LTIFR). In the prevailing Corona pandemic, a Corona Response Team was integrated February 2020, providing measures to successfully protect our employees.

Compliance

As Compliance is an essential part of ELG’s Code of Conduct, efforts in this area are a top priority. In order to enhance awareness in our employees we provide training and implemented a holistic approach that takes relevant information and perspectives into account – top-down as well as bottom-up. ELG’s Compliance Management System (ECMS) provides us with a state-of-the-art tool to continuously assess and improve our measures.

Commercial Focus

In 2020, we began to strengthen our company from within by adapting internal structure to allow even closer cooperation. Today, we work in three strong divisions under the ELG Group, namely ELG Stainless AMER APAC, ELG Stainless EMEA, and ELG Utica Alloys.

We found a Transformation Office that closely attends to change initiative and works with our Board.

Outlook

As we look forward into 2021, we continue to strengthen our core of business with our transformation initiatives and drive digitalization. Our Health & Safety efforts intensify by implementing ‘near miss reporting’ and management (gemba) walks.
